Cabaret Show
Chiang Mai, Thailand, 1997
In 1997 I was involved with a photo training workshop with the Indochina Media Memorial Foundation, a UK and Thailand based organization dedicated to improving the work ethics of working journalists in the Southeast Asia region, from radio, TV, print journalism and photography.
The photography workshop was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand over a period of three weeks.
One night I was walking with four of the 16 students in Chiang Mai city when we came across this Cabaret Club that had a transvestite stage show upstairs.
We went upstairs and I asked the management if we could take photos of the dancers as they prepared for the show and during the show.
They agreed we could so we wondered around the dressing room shooting photos of the dancers applying their make up and getting ready for the show. It was quite eye opening experience for all of us.
The show itself was well choreographed with a live band and drew cheers from the audience. The next few night I took other students to the show so they all had the chance to shoot in the club.
These photos were taken over a period of three nights.
